EVERETT, Wash. – Everett Community College is naming its basketball court in honor of retired athletic director Larry Walker at a celebration Oct. 20. The court dedication will occur following the EvCC women’s basketball game, which begins at 4 p.m. at the Walt Price Student Fitness Center, 2206 Tower St. in Everett. After the dedication, the EvCC men’s basketball team will play. At both games, current players will face off against Trojan basketball alumni. The games are free and open to the public. “We are thrilled to have this opportunity to recognize Larry for the countless hours of service and dedication to this college and generations of Trojan student-athletes. Naming this court inside of the beautiful facility that he helped build is the perfect way to honor Larry,” said EvCC Athletic Director Garet Studer, who succeeded Walker. Walker retired in November 2016 after 31 years of working with EvCC athletes. He was integral in bringing back sports that had long ago been eliminated at EvCC including baseball, volleyball and cross country. He also was a key player in the creation of the state-of-the-art Walt Price Student Fitness Center, which replaced the gym EvCC built in 1958 at 13th Street and Rockefeller Avenue. Walker started in education at Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane in 1975. He came to EvCC in 1985 as the men’s basketball coach, and in 1986 he became athletic coordinator. In 2001, he was appointed as the college’s athletic director. EvCC has 11 athletic teams including basketball, soccer, cross country, track and field, softball, volleyball and baseball.
