WIAA Athlete of the Week

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association announced its Athlete of the Week winners for Week 4 (September 17-September 23, 2017), Wednesday.

Each week throughout the school year, the WIAA recognizes varsity athletes who exhibited an outstanding performance for the previous week (based off of nominations). All varsity level students in good academic standing at their schools are eligible to receive the WIAA Athlete of the Week Award. Students may win the WIAA Athlete of the Week Award once during any given academic year.

Brandon Battle, West Valley (Yakima), Football (SR)
Battle was 22-of-29 through the air, for 479 yards and seven touchdowns (both school records) leading the Rams to a 55-26 win over Davis. He also rushed for 22 yards and hit four different wide receivers for touchdowns.

Haily Payne, Wenatchee, Swimming and Diving (FR)
Payne won two individual events and was on two winning relays against Eastmont, and then had two more first places at the 30-team Mukilteo Invitational. She won the 200m IM by 7.08 seconds and the 100m butterfly in record fashion, besting a 2004 meet record with a time of 56.75 seconds.

Stefan Mueller, Shorewood, Cross Country (JR)
Mueller took home his first individual victory at last week’s league meet at Hamlin Park. His winning time of 16:56, helped pave the path for a team victory on the hilly course.

Cassidy O’Dell, Lynnwood, Soccer (SR)
O’Dell scored seven goals in three games for the Royals, scoring three against Meadowdale and Arlington, and one late against Oak Harbor.

Zac Berryman, Ephrata, Football (SR)
Berryman passed for 298 yards and two touchdowns, in the Tigers’ 35-14 win over Ellensburg. He added 112 yards on the ground and scored three times.

Bella Brown, Black Hills, Soccer (SR)
Brown was involved in six of the 13 goals scored by her team last week, leading to victories over Mark Morris (one goal and one assist), W. F. West (two goals and one assist), and Skyview (one assist off of a corner kick).

Jared Donnel, Bellevue Christian, Cross Country (SR)
Donnel set the school’s records, running a 5K race in 16:20 and a three mile race in 16:00.

Isa Meyers, The Northwest School, Cross Country (SR)
Meyers won the girls’ race at the Sundodger Invitational, against runners from all classifications. She also won the first Emerald City League meet of the season by over 40 seconds.

Jackson Kimmel, Crosspoint, Soccer (SR)
Kimmel has posted a hat trick in all five games for the Warriors this year, leading to a 5-0 start.

Meleah Kandoll, Toutle Lake, Cross Country (JR)
Kandoll won the 2.75 mile league race at Toutle with a time of 19:12, and again at Lewis & Clark State Park with a time of 21.43, which was a seven team league meet.
