Lockdown initiated at Kamiak High School

Kamiak High School went into lockdown at about 9:41 AM after a teacher reported hearing possible “gun shots” near her classroom. The teacher was alone in their classroom on the third floor when they heard the “gun shots” and called 911 at about 9:38 AM. Due to the nature of the call multiple agencies responded to assist (Washington State Patrol, Edmonds, Everett, Mill Creek, Lynnwood Police Departments and the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office).

Mukilteo Officers arrived at the school at about 9:41 AM and quickly placed Kamiak and surrounding schools in lockdown. When Officers reached the third floor, of the main school building, they found smoke in the hallway and it smelled of burnt fireworks. Officers later located the remnants of two fireworks in the stairwell between the second and third floor of the school.

Officers did a complete search of the school and did not find anyone injured or anything else suspicious. There were post-it notes on a few lockers that were initially thought to be suspicious, but it was later determined they were related to a class project being put on by the leadership class.

A more detailed search was conducted and Washington State Patrol bombs dogs were brought in as well. The Mukilteo Police Department and assisting agencies took every precautionary measure they could to ensure the safety of the students and faculty, before lifting the lockdown which ended at about 1:10 PM. The school resumed its normal schedule after the lockdown was lifted.

No suspects have been identified at this time, but the incident is still being investigated.
