New flood warning issued for Snohomish

Shortly after noon Monday, the National Weather Service issued a flood warning for small streams in West Snohomish County and the Snohomish River at Snohomish.

The new warning will remain effective until 12:45 a.m. Officials have been closely monitoring the Snohomish River at Snohomish and Snohomish. Both stations had reached major flood stage by 2 p.m. The National Weather Service issued a new flood warning for the Snohomish effective until 12:45 a.m. Tuesday.

In addition to major flooding on the Snohomish, authorities caution that excessive runoff is causing small streams in the area to run high or flood.

As of noon Monday, the Snohomish at Monroe had surpassed major flood stage at a level of 17.54 feet. The latest models show the Snohomish River at Snohomish cresting at just over 30 feet early Tuesday morning.

After rapidly changing conditions overnight and throughout the morning, the Skykomish river at Gold Bar crested Monday morning, while the latest models show Stillaguamish at Arlington reaching 18.2 feet by mid-evening.

Numerous Snohomish County roads continue to be closed due to water over the roadway. For the safety of our residents and first responders, individuals are urged to heed water over roadway and road closed signs.

Aided by cooler weather and lower mountain temperatures, county rivers and nearby residents should expect floodwaters to slowly begin to recede seasonal normal levels during the next 24-48 hours.

As flood waters recede, officials will turn their attention to potential landslide risks and damage assessment. Road flooding and related erosion should be reported to the municipality where it occurs.

Flooding on county roads can be reported to the countys Public Works Department at 425-388-7500 or contact.pwrm@snoco.org. Relevant flood information and a current road closure list can be found at www.snoco.org and clicking "Flood Emergency Information."
