Police use-of-force incidents

EVERETT, Wash. - SMART detectives have concluded investigations into six police use-of-force incidents that occurred in Snohomish County in 2018. The completed cases are:

SMART Case #18-01 - Just after 8:00 p.m. on January 21, 2018, a woman reported her Lake Stevens husband called her to say he was suicidal and wanted police to kill him. Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office deputies located the husband standing behind his vehicle in a gravel parking lot near 51st Ave SE and 20th St SE on Ebey Island. Deputies talked and told him to come out from behind the vehicle. The husband did not initially comply then came out holding what appeared to be a weapon. Deputies fired multiple shots and the 35 year-old died at the scene. The case has been forwarded to the Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review.

SMART Case #18-03 - At about 8:20 p.m. on February 12, 2018, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Mountain Loop Highway, east of Granite Falls, on the report of a suicidal male. Arriving deputies located the man in his vehicle and tried talking to him. The man was uncooperative and threatened to harm himself with a large knife. The man then armed himself with a hatchet, exited the truck and walked toward the deputies. One deputy attempted to use a Taser and another fired his sidearm. The man was transported to Harborview Regional Medical Center for treatment. The case has been forwarded to the Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review.

SMART Case #18-04 - At about 9:50 p.m. on July 14, 2018, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a residence in the 4100 block of 120th Place SE in Everett, WA on the report of a woman being threatened and assaulted by her 67-year-old husband. Arriving deputies contacted an armed suspect and several shots were fired. The husband sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken into custody. The man was transported to Providence Regional Medical Center for further treatment. The case has been forwarded to the Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review.

SMART Case #18-05 - At about 2:40 a.m. on September 9, 2018, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 7900 block of Port Susan Pl in Stanwood, WA on the report of a domestic violence assault call. The victim called 911 to report that her boyfriend had assaulted her and he had a knife. Arriving deputies contacted the man and gave him verbal commands to drop the weapon. The 43 year-old man did not drop the weapon. He was shot by deputies and died at the scene. The case has been forwarded to the Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review.

SMART Case #18-07 - At about 10:15 p.m. on October 23, 2018, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the report of a disturbance in Bothell, WA at 196th Pl SW and 6th Dr SE. As one deputy arrived, a pick-up truck left the area at a high rate of speed. Believing the vehicle occupant had been involved in the disturbance, the deputy unsuccessfully attempted to stop the pick-up. A pursuit ensued and the pick-up finally stopped near the intersection of N. Damson Rd and Filbert Rd in Bothell. Shots were fired and the 24 year-old male driver was struck. The driver was taken to Harborview Medical Center where he later died. The case has been forwarded to the Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review.

SMART Case #18-08 - At about 4:45 a.m. on October 31, 2018, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a reported motor vehicle collision in Lynnwood, WA at the intersection of 144th St SW and Meadow Road. Witnesses reported that a black SUV intentionally backed into a Camaro and the two drivers got into an altercation. During the altercation, the SUV driver stabbed the Camaro driver and began striking the Camaro with a hatchet before fleeing the scene. Sheriff’s deputies pursued the SUV when it failed to stop. After a lengthy chase, a PIT maneuver was used in the 19500 block of 136th Avenue NE in Woodinville, WA. The suspect vehicle went off the roadway, deputies fired at the vehicle and the 42 year-old male driver was struck. He was transported to Harborview Regional Medical Center but was later released and booked into the Snohomish County Jail on assault and eluding charges. The case has been forwarded to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review.
