Commercial Shot in Bellevue Could Crash the Super Bowl

Locals are feverishly viewing and voting for Kirkland filmmaker Doug Stapleton’s 30-second Doritos commercial in hopes that it will win the contest to Crash the Super Bowl in 2016. The commercial, called “Afternoon Tea” was recently accepted and is currently already among the highest rated videos on the contest website: https://crashthesuperbowl.doritos.com/video/1902

In its tenth and final year, Doritos Crash the Super Bowl Contest incentivizes independent filmmakers like Stapleton to compete for the chance for their commercial to air to millions of Super Bowl viewers. The winner also receives one million big ones. Stapleton said his wife encouraged him to “go for it” after batting around the concept for a few years. The scene takes place inside a retirement community and shatters stereotypes by revealing seniors’ wild and crazy side – while eating Doritos, of course.

Stapleton along with producer Lois Greenberg, filmed their commercial at Pacific Regent in Bellevue this past October after the community’s national management company, Watermark Retirement Communities, viewed the storyboard and agreed that the humorous scene was fun and in keeping with the company’s mission to help people thrive. Using local professional actors, the shoot took two days, captivating actual residents and their family members who got a kick out of watching the shoot, particularly the scenes involving a shirtless male dancer.

Since the Kirkland Reporter published this 2012 piece about Doug Stapleton, Doug and his wife had a baby and he went back into corporate sales to support the family. However, his creative juices continue to flow. Public votes for “Afternoon Tea” can help this lifelong Kirklander Crash the Super Bowl and hit the jackpot. From a pool of up to 50 semifinalists, three finalists will be named, and official voting will begin on January 5th, 2016 to name a winner.  View it, rate it and share it!
